Sending boys to summer camp is the No. 1 goal behind an annual community fundraising campaign by the Friends of Scouting, according to its chairman, John Coburn, senior vice president of Oak Valley Community Bank.
The Greater Yosemite Council of the Waukeen District of Boy Scouts of America serving Manteca, Ripon, Escalon, Tracy and Lathrop will be sending their scouts to Camp Mensinger located in the Sierra above Pinecrest Lake.
The Greater Yosemite Council of the Boy Scouts of America also operates Camp Warren McDonnell, a Cub Scout camp on the Merced River in Livingston. In all some 300 youths aged 8 to 18 are expected to attend the two camps.
Scouting has been active in the U.S. for more than 100 years. It is of great importance to the Central Valley with Scouts giving of themselves to their home communities throughout the region.
The Friends of Scouting has set a goal of $15,000 in their fund raiser that is expected to be kicked off at a campaign off breakfast in mid-February that will be held in the Godfather’s Room at the Chez Cheri Restaurant at the Manteca Golf Course. The event is being hosted by Frank Guinta. Last year’s campaign effort resulted in $9,000 in donations, Coburn said.
“I plan to make contact in all the communities and get two or three volunteers from each area,” Coburn added. The Oak Valley Community Bank manager also serves on the executive board of the Greater Yosemite Council of the Boy Scouts movement in the region.
Plans call for naming five captains to serve in the campaign with each asked to enlist five workers to serve under their direction. Those volunteers will in turn contact five people they know in their communities who have supported scouting efforts in past years to be active in the effort.
For those wishing to be involved in the summer camp fund raiser, they can contact Coburn at 531-8252 or Scouting Executive Stephen Olson at 614-3363.
