Mary Cariged of Ripon celebrated her 102nd birthday on Wednesday.
She was honored by Sister Ann Venita Britto and her Ministry of Caring during the senior luncheon.
The Valentine’s Day-themed event at St. Anthony’s parish gym included Emeritus at Merrill Gardens, the independent and assisted living facility in Manteca, catering the meal.
“We’re very thankful for Emeritus, especially the generosity to cater our lunch,” said Sister Ann, who again welcomed folks from St. Jude Care Center, Prestige, Almond Blossom, The Commons and Merrill Gardens.
The day belonged to Cariged, who was showered with cards, songs and gifts from students of St. Anthony’s School.
She was born in Utah – whereabouts unknown, according to Cariged, since the town no longer exists – in 1912, moving to California when she was 6.
For about 45 years, Cariged has lived at the same house where Highway 120 meets French Camp Road. “I enjoy being at home,” she said.
Her friends shared her secret to her longevity – a good sense of humor.
Cariged is also looking forward to this weekend at Angelinas’ Spaghetti House in Stockton. That’s where she’ll be joined by friends and family to further celebrate her birthday.
