Residents in the northeastern section of Ripon flooded a police dispatcher with calls shortly after 8 p.m. Monday night after hearing what they described as a bomb blast near a church and adjacent park in the 300 block of Boesh Avenue.

The Manteca Bomb Squad was called after a pipe bomb was found and reported to police.

Bomb technician Mike Keener said the bomb was countercharged causing the explosion heard by the area residents.  He could give no further details at press time.  Ripon police Lt. Steve Merchant said the incident was taken care of appropriately.
