Cheryl Meeker, Manteca Unified’s senior director of elementary education, led the kudos to Lincoln Elementary School teacher Tammy Dunbar and her students.
The fifth-grade teacher, accompanied by some members of her class, was recognized by school district officials at the last Board of Trustees meeting for being a Grand Prize winner in the 2010 eInstruction Global Classroom Makeover worldwide competition to the tune of nearly $80,000. That’s the amount that will go toward equipping their classroom with the latest state-of-the-art in classroom technology. Dunbar and her class were one of three grand prize winners in the kindergarten through fifth-grade category of the competition.
Dunbar and her students received a plaque of appreciation from the district presented by Meeker.
Prior to the presentation, members of the Board of Trustees and district officials watched the video submitted by Dunbar and her students to the competition. It showed Dunbar and the students performing in the video production. The original rap-style music and lyrics were all created and produced by the students under the guidance of Dunbar who also performed some of the song numbers in the production.
The fourth time proved to be the charm for Dunbar and her class. This was the fourth year that her fifth-grade class sent an entry to the competition.
Announcement of their winning the grand prize gave them the proverbial 15 minutes of fame – though theirs lasted longer than that – with several television stations airing the story live from the school the day the big news was announced. Several area newspapers also honored them with front-page coverage of the exciting news.
