RIPON — The San Joaquin County Coroner’s office has released the name of a Sunday night motorcycle fatality that occurred in the northeast section of Ripon at about 8 p.m.

Joe Lewis Gallegos, 34, of Stockton, was killed when he collided with the concrete curbing and a sign pole that was part of a roundabout in the center of the intersection of River Road and North Ripon Road.

A witness stopped at the northbound boulevard stop estimated the sports type motorcycle was traveling well in excess of 100 miles per hour when it struck the curbing and flipped six to eight times in the air before landing in the roadway with the man thrown some 12 feet away from the motorcycle.

Ripon Police First Sergeant Steve Merchant said the motorcycle basically exploded into small pieces that littered a debris field.
