Spring semester Adult School classes got underway last week.

 The Adult School offers a variety of classes for adults who’d like to enhance their job opportunities, improve their English language skills or learn a new life skill.  Adults, age 18 or older, can register during regular business hours at the Adult School office located at 2271 W. Louise Ave.  The office is open from 8 to 4 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 8 a.m.to 3 p.m. on Fridays.  A picture ID is required to register.  The school calendar and the full listing of classes and class fees are available on the school’s website at www.mantecausd.net.  Look for the Adult School listing under schools. 



High school diploma, GED certificate preparation

The Adult School is a great place to complete course requirement to earn a high school diploma or to take classes in preparation of taking the battery of GED tests for a GED certificate.  A school counselor is available to meet with students to review past high school work and high school transcripts and advise students about available options and the time needed to meet their desired goals

Diploma students now have the ability to access class lessons on line at home as well as work in the class work with the assistance of a teacher.  High School diploma and GED preparation classes on site are free.  GED testing is offered the first Wednesday and Thursday of most months for a fee.  GED distance learning is also available for a $40 materials fee.  Students meet with a teacher weekly to receive instruction and materials to study at home.  There is a cost to take the battery of GED tests.



English as a second language

The school also offers beginning and intermediate classes for those wishing to learn English as a second language.  The ESL classes are very popular and those enrolling will need to be flexible as limited space is available. Some space remains for those interested in afternoon classes.

Career technical education available

Vocational education classes offer adults the opportunity to expand their career options or explore skills needed for a new career field.  These classes require sufficient enrollment and begin at a variety of times.  Both daytime and evening classes are available.   Computer application classes include Computer Basics, Introduction to the internet and email, Microsoft Word, Excel and Publisher and Power Point. 

The Medical Terminology classes are a way for those interested in exploring a career in the health field industry to begin building their skills or for caregivers who wish to develop a working knowledge of terminology in order to better understand and communicate with health care professionals. The school has also partnered with Boston Reed College to offer additional classes in the Medical field that provide successful students with the ability to begin work as a Clinical Medical Assistant or Pharmacy Technician upon completion of the class.   These classes are currently underway but new sessions will begin soon.   Additional vocational education classes include Woodworking and Cabinet Making and Introduction to Career Office Occupations. 

Students interested in career technical classes will want to register right away.  Classes without sufficient enrollment are subject to cancellation.  There is a minimal charge for career technical classes.  Spring classes run through May 16.
