STOCKTON — San Joaquin County is preparing to expand its footprint in downtown Stockton.
County officials Tuesday conducted a demolition ceremony for the interior the former In-Shape building to kick off construction of improvements to the new San Joaquin County District Attorney Offices.
“The upgrade to the facility will provide a safe and modern workplace for the hardworking men and women of the DA’s office and will better serve the residents of San Joaquin County,” said Robert Rickman, Chair of the San Joaquin County Board of Supervisors.
The Board of Supervisors approved spending $11 million to purchase the 7-story building with 87,197 square feet that once housed the In Shape Health Clubs corporate offices and a downtown health club at 6 South El Dorado Street.
The building and adjoining 156-space parking structure that was included in the purchase were built in the 1970s will require upgrades that range from heating and air systems and a new roof, current tech standards and other improvements.
It will require $25 million for tenant improvements. The combined $36 million costs less than acquiring land and building the space and parking space from scratch.
The building is directly west of the 13-story county courthouse that was completed in 2017 and to the north of the probation department. It is also kitty corner from the old courthouse which is adjacent to the current district attorney offices.
The overall cluster of the listed buildings is also across the street from the San Joaquin County administration building to effectively create a grouping of county facilities.
The property and adjacent parking lot, located at 6 South El Dorado Street in downtown Stockton, includes nearly 87,200 square feet of usable space and sits on about 1.5 acres.
Once completed, the building will house nearly 320 employees from the District Attorney’s Office. It will take 18-24 months for the District Attorney’s Office to move from the old courthouse located on 222 Weber Avenue to the new facility.
The improvements will include, but are not limited to, parking garage improvements, upgrades to existing lighting options, information technology infrastructure improvements to align with County standards, construction of workspaces specific to District Attorney operations, and upgrades to modernize the existing building management systems (boilers, HVAC, lighting, electrical, plumbing, etc.).
