Brittany Vang, who is the salutatorian of Weston Ranch High's Class of 2020, is joined by parents, Cindy and Shon, during her special day.

Brittany Vang is from a large family.

She's No. 8 out of 15 siblings.

But when it comes to her Class of 2020, the Weston Ranch High senior ranks No. 2, academically.

For that, she earned salutatorian.

"I learned about (being salutatorian) about two weeks ago," said Vang.

The announcement came via a surprise visit from her Principal Troy Fast and his staff.

"It was a very special moment," said Brittany Vang, who is the daughter of Cindy and Shon Vang. "I thought that maybe they would just throw me my award."

She mentioned the latter in jest, referencing social distancing amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

"We made sure we were inside and at a safe distance away," Vang added.

She's using her free time to learn more about interior design. For that, she can thank Pinterest, the online site for home ideas, style inspiration and other creative concepts.

"It used to be that I no time for hobbies," said Vang, who is also incorporating physical activities during home isolation.

She had a weighted GPA of 4.38 and will be attending UC Davis in the fall, with plans of majoring in Neurobiology, which is the study of the nervous system.

Brittany Vang, who came to WRHS via August Knodt Elementary School, was involved in Health Occupations Students of America and Key Club.

She particularly enjoyed helping out with the local non-profit Bread of Life.

"On Saturdays, we would deliver groceries to needy families," said Vang of the food-distribution ministry.

Her favorite memories with HOSA was attending several state conventions (Sacramento, Los Angeles) and the international event in Florida.

In addition, Vang served as co-president with California Scholarship Federation and helped tutor students.
