Three Manteca teens die, driver in jail after DUI crash into river

Three Manteca teenagers are dead and the driver is behind bars following a DUI crash on Dos Reis Road on Dec. 23 that ended with a vehicle upside down in the San Joaquin River.

According to the California Highway Patrol, four teens were driving westbound on Dos Reis Road at a “high rate of speed” when the driver, a 17-year-old male, went over the raised levee, through a nearby fence, and flipped the vehicle onto it’s top in the San Joaquin River.

While the driver was able to get out of the vehicle under his own power, and suffered only minor injuries, the crash killed two Manteca teenagers – ages 16 and 17, respectively – and nearly killed a third in a 16-year-old female that was ultimately resuscitated and taken to a nearby hospital.  She died later at the hospital.

Both deceased females were pronounced at the scene.

According to the CHP, “alcohol impairment was determined to be a factor in collision,” and additional information is unlikely to be released by the agency because of the ages of the people that were involved in the incident.

The crash came amidst one of the busiest DUI enforcement periods of the entire year – with agencies throughout the state deploying additional resources try and located intoxicated drivers and remove them before they have the opportunity to injure themselves or others.
