A third teen has died as the result of a suspected DUI crash on Dos Reis Road near Lathrop that ended with a vehicle upside down in the San Joaquin River.
Two died at the scene of the crash on. Dec. 23 while a third succumbed to injuries several days later.
Those dying were Aliya Lopez, 17, and Macie Gines, 16, both of Manteca and Giselle Herrera, 16, of Lodi.
According to the California Highway Patrol, four teens were driving westbound in a Honda Accord on Dos Reis Road at a “high rate of speed” when the driver, a 17-year-old male, went over the raised levee, through a nearby fence, and flipped the vehicle onto its top in the San Joaquin River.
While the driver was able to get out of the vehicle under his own power, and suffered only minor injuries, the crash killed two passengers and nearly killed a third. A 16-year-old female was ultimately resuscitated and taken to a nearby hospital. The third passenger ended up dying several days later.
According to the CHP, “alcohol impairment was determined to be a factor in collision,” and additional information is unlikely to be released by the agency because of the ages of the people that were involved in the incident.
The crash came amidst one of the busiest DUI enforcement periods of the entire year – with agencies throughout the state deploying additional resources try and located intoxicated drivers and remove them before they have the opportunity to injure themselves or others.
