A man in his 30s jumped off the Main Street overpass crossing the 120 Bypass and on to the westbound lanes where he was struck by a pickup truck and killed.

The incident started at 2:01 a.m. Tuesday.

A solo Manteca Police officer was responding to assist another officer on a call for service on South Main Street near the 120 Bypass when he saw a car weaving back and forth behind him.

The officer pulled over thinking the suspect was trying to flag him down.

The suspect pulled over and exited his car.

But due to him not acting right, the officer kept his distance and waited for other officers to respond.

The suspect chose to get back in his car, so the officer got back in his patrol car.

Then the suspect rammed the rear of the patrol car causing the air bags to deploy and the driver door not to open.

The officer was shaken up and unable to exit the patrol car.

The first responding officer to the patrol car being rammed located the suspect on the east side of the Main Street overcrossing. He was standing on the highway sign attached to the overcrossing.

Officers attempted to communicate with the suspect, but he was speaking rapid and not making sense.

After a couple minutes of attempted negotiations, the suspect chose to jump from the sign onto the westbound lanes of  the 120 Bypass.

Upon landing he was struck by a pickup truck headed westbound on the Bypass. The driver of the pickup stopped and is cooperating with the investigation.

The police officer that was struck has been a police officer for less than a year.

He was not injured, but was sent to the hospital as a precaution to be checked out.

The officer was driving a Ford Interceptor SUV that sustained major damage.

The suspect is a white male in his early 30’s.

No further information was available pending notification of his next of kin.

He drove a 2001 Honda Accord.

The California Highway Patrol has blocked the Bypass’ westbound lanes while conducting their investigation as well as to accommodate the coroner’s response.

Any witnesses to this incident are urged to call the Manteca Police Department at 209.456.8101 to provide a statement.
