Suspect faces charge of assault on MPD detectives

A 37-year-old Manteca man has been arrested after ramming a police vehicle and nearly hitting two Manteca Police detectives.

Detectives from Manteca Police Department’s Street Crimes Unit (SCU) on Wednesday attempted to detain Robert Shermantine regarding a narcotics sales investigation and an active warrant for violating Post Release Community Supervision.

Detectives located Shermantine at  the AM/PM, 2056 Crestwood Ave., and placed their police unit behind his vehicle to prevent him from fleeing. Upon this occurring, Shermantine quickly got back into his vehicle and rammed the police car, creating enough room to escape. Two detectives were near the vehicle when this occurred. One of the detectives was nearly struck with Shermantine’s car. No detectives were injured in the assault

Shermantine fled the area with detectives attempting to pursue. The damage to the police unit, however, prevented detectives from keeping up and the pursuit was called off.

Later on Wednesday, detectives located Shermantine in another vehicle and attempted a traffic stop near southbound Highway 99 and Austin Road. Shermantine failed to yield and another short pursuit ensued. The pursuit was terminated due to heavy traffic in the area .

A Ramey warrant (probable cause warrant) was authored by MPD Detectives and signed by a San Joaquin County Superior Court Judge. The warrant was for violation of section 245(c) PC, assault with a deadly weapon on a peace office.

On Thursday information was obtained that Shermantine was possibly in a residence in the 500 block of Pioneer Ave in Lodi. The Manteca-Ripon SWAT team and was activated and proceeded to that location in order to safely take Shermantine into custody. Shermantine surrendered to MPD’s SWAT team without incident.

Following his apprehension, another search warrant was executed at a residence associated with Shermantine in the 1800 block of Olivewood Ave in Manteca. Detectives located methamphetamine, cocaine and evidence of narcotics sales. Ammunition was also located at the residence.

Shermantine was booked this evening at the San Joaquin County Jail on the following charges: assault with a deadly weapon on a peace officer, Felony Evading (wanton and willful disregard for public safety). possession of a controlled substance for sales, and felon in possession of ammunition.
