The unidentified student that allegedly threatened to bring a gun to the River Islands STEAM Academy has been arrested and booked into San Joaquin County Juvenile Hall.

The development, announced on Tuesday, came after investigators from the San Joaquin County District Attorney’s Office aided in the ongoing investigation and authorities made the determination that charges were warranted in the case.

“Both the Lathrop Police Department and River Islands Academy take incidents like this very seriously,” the Lathrop Police Department wrote in a statement announcing the development. “We are committed to using all available tools and resources, including the support of the District Attorney’s Office, to investigate and, when appropriate, prosecute any individuals who threaten the safety and well-being of their fellow students or any residents of Lathrop.

“The safety of our students, staff, and the entire community remains our top priority. We will continue to work diligently to maintain a safe and positive learning environment for all our students.”

The development came a day after the Lathrop Police announced there was no ongoing threat in the matter which occurred last week on campus at the River Islands STEAM Academy and was captured in a cell phone video that has been widely disseminated amongst the school community.

Police noted that they were aware of the video and that it was being used as part of the “ongoing investigation” – further adding on Monday night that the agency and its officers are committed to “providing accurate and timely information” as the investigation proceeds.

Police searched the home of the student earlier this week and announced on Monday evening that they would be turning the matter of the San Joaquin County District Attorney’s Office for consideration of charges.

Several parents in the community began voicing their concerns – and their criticisms – on Monday after news of the incident last week broke and wasn’t met with any specific follow-up information that quelled the fears spurred in no small part by the rash of school shootings across the United States.

Some parents even said that they chose to keep their children out of school out of an abundance of caution after the events at the River Islands STEAM Academy rocked the growing but close-knit community located on the west side of the San Joaquin River within Lathrop’s city limits.
