One local driver will be without their vehicle for a little while after Lathrop Police impounded it for illegal sideshow activity on Sunday.

The driver, whose identity was not released by the agency, was also subsequently arrested.

According to Lathrop Police, officers were patrolling areas known for sideshow activity on Sunday when they came upon the intersection of D’Arcy Parkway and Christopher Way. When they arrived, they discovered the vehicle – a late model Chevrolet Camaro – spinning donuts in the intersection.

“Doing burnouts and drifting endangers citizens, drivers and their occupants, and many times causes damage to roadways and business properties,” the Lathrop Police Department said in a statement about the incident. “LPD takes these dangerous situations with a zero tolerance approach and will enforce to the fullest extent of the law.”

Lathrop has had issues in the past with vehicles doing burnouts and spinning donuts in intersections, and enforcement was increased to try and combat the problem. By intentionally breaking traction with the road, inexperienced drivers have a high likelihood of losing control of the vehicle – slamming into other vehicles, curbs, or even crowds of spectators that gather to watch.

A woman was killed in Los Angeles on Christmas Day, and the East Bay area – as one of the places where sideshows originated and evolved into what we see today – has was home to multiple deadly sideshow events in the last year.

In December, the San Joaquin County Sideshow Task Force – comprised of officers from throughout the county – conducted an operation that resulted in 13 arrests, 21 citations, and six impounded vehicles.
