It took a dedicated team to make possible the sixth annual All-Star Olympics Wednesday at Sierra High.

Assistant Principal Ann Marie Shaw, for starters, acknowledged those who helped out at the 2023 Games held at Daniel Teicheira Memorial Stadium.

Included were teacher Jeff Greene and the leadership students coupled with teacher Melissa Crooker, who spearheaded the donation efforts.

Derrick Burnett and Ernie Williams, who are Manteca Unified’s Adapted Physical Education Specialists, organized the running, jumping, and throwing events for the 100 or so athletes from the Special Day classes in the district – namely, students in the programs at Manteca High, East Union High, Sierra High, Weston Ranch High, and Lathrop High – and the San Joaquin County Office of Education.

Speaking of participants, Shaw was pleased with the strong turnout, indicating that the 2023 Games had the best numbers following COVID-19 pandemic. Last year’s All-Stars Olympics had 80 participants while 2021 were limited to students in the SHS program.

The events, according to organizers, are modified from that of a traditional track and field meet – running, jumping, throwing, etc. – allowing the participants to compete in ways more accessible to them.

The competition is fun and friendly.

“Everyone gets a medal,” Shaw said.

The opening ceremony featured Woodward Elementary School student Miles Lima performing the National Anthem.

Shaw noted that the All-Star Olympics were “fun and exciting” for all those involved.
