American Social recently opened in Ripon.

Realtor, developer, and restauranter Jerry Powell took over the former Fina by John Surla site at 200 West River Road during the summer.

He made a few interior changes while keeping the showcase kitchen intact. The new signage went up last week just in time for Friday's grand opening.

The Ripon Chamber of Commerce will be conducting the ribbon-cutting ceremony that day beginning at 5 p.m.

Powell along with his business partners have several successful restaurants in Turlock.

Included are Cuts Steakhouse, The Udder Place, Katana Sushi Bar, and the Great American Grill in Hilmar.

His chef at American Social is Nick Patire, who served as the executive chef at Cuts.

"We've been getting our cooks up to speed," he said last Friday.

Diners can see his staff at work from their view of the showcase kitchen. "They're on-point and detail oriented," Patire said.

Among the specialties are the pastas, steaks, small plate items, and a full bar featuring craft cocktails.

Some of the menu items are grilled chicken fettuccine alfredo, grilled shrimp fettuccine alfredo, and creamy basil pesto pappardelle.

Appetizers include a small charcuterie, grilled pancetta wrapped shrimp and tomato bruschetta.

American Social, in addition, features Artisan Pizzas, salads, sandwich / burger, and paninis.

Powell grew up in Hughson. He attended Hughson High, graduating in 1988.

He joined the Marine Corp after graduation and served overseas.

Powell later enrolled at Stanislaus State, where he earned his degree in Business.

He's been involved in all aspects of commercial real estate, construction, development, and property management.

Powell currently serves on several committees for the Turlock Chamber of Commerce and is on the Turlock Salvation Army board of directors.
