Season’s first major storm is on the way

There’s a 42 percent chance of more than 2 inches of rain falling on Manteca, Ripon, and Lathrop between 4 p.m. Tuesday and 4 p.m. Friday.

The National Weather Service in issuing its advisory forecast stressed the first major storm of the season could be problematic if efforts aren’t made to clear leaves from street gutters.

The same is true of roof gutters.

At the same time, roads are expected to be slick and potentially dangerous to navigate given its will be the season’s first major rain,

The weather service’s confidence level of at least an inch of rain falling in the 72-hour period on South San Joaquin County was slightly  lower as it was placed at 76 percent.

For the same time period, there is more than a 50 percent chance that 8 inches of snow will fall on Sonora Pass on Highway 108 at 9,623 feet as well as Tioga Pass at 9,943 feet on Highway 120.

If that happens, both trans-Sierra routes are likely to close for the season.

The National Park Service is now advising anyone entering Yosemite to make sure they are carrying chains.

Temperatures from the valley floor to the Sierra crest are expected to be below normal. There also will be gusty winds at times.
