River Islands tech students place in STEAM Fair

Students from EPIC Academy and River Islands Technology Academy recently competed in the 65th annual San Joaquin County STEAM Fair & Expo hosted by the SJC Office of Education.

They were among the more than 440 students (kindergarten through 12 grades) who represented 25 area schools in this one-day event held on Feb. 10.

All competitors were given an opportunity to present their projects to a group of volunteer judges, consisting of 60 STEM professionals, teachers, and college students from the University of the Pacific, to name a few.

The STEM (Science Technology Engineering Math) programs conduct such events to promote science and engineering exploration for students, according to SJCOE.

Among the local winners were:

·         Kindergarten through first grade – Science, 1st place, EPIC Academy, “Limelight,” Saanjhi Patel, Tanmay Kanchgar; 2nd place, EPIC Academy, “The Yummy Gummy,” Noor Saeed; 3rd place, EPIC Academy, “Water & Ship Experiment,” Medha Prodduturi.

·         Second through third gradeMath / Computer Science, 2nd place, EPIC Academy, “Mirror, Mirror on the Wall, Which Food Item is Safest of All,” Khushi Aggarwal; 3rd place, “A.I. Breakfast Buddy-Exploring A.I. Breakfast Decisions for Kids,” Sriyan Dangeti. Science, 1st place, River Islands Technology Academy, “Are We Alone in Space,” Agambir Sandhu; 3rd place, River Islands Technology Academy, “Slime-ology,” Sihi Karthik.

·         Fourth through fifth grade Engineering, 1st place, River Islands Technology Academy, Prevent Flooding & Pollution with a Garden,” Varshitha Satheeshkumar; Science, 3rd place (tie), EPIC Academy, “Decaying Eggshells,” Avni Sisodia, Sanvitha Peddinti.

·         Sixth through eighth grade Science, 3rd place, “The Power of Magnets,” EPIC Academy, Meera Satheesh Kumar; Math / Computer Science, 1st place, EPIC Academy, “Security with A.I.,” Shreyas Muddey; 3rd place, River Islands Technology Academy, “Microbes on a Mission – Green Mining through Bioleaching,” Natasha Theckanath.

EPIC Academy’s Shreyas Muddey was among eight students from the SJCOE event to advance to the California Science and Engineering Fair scheduled for April 16.
