Chief Ed Ormonde of the Ripon Police Department announced that applications are still being accepted for the Community Police Academy.

“Half of the positions are currently filled,” he said at last week’s Ripon City Council meeting.

The Community Police Academy is a nine-week program that will be held each Wednesday – 6 to 8 p.m. – from Sept. 15 through Nov. 3.

Applications will be accepted through this Friday.

Part of the screening process will consist of a basic background check. Applicants must be at least age 18, reside locally or have a substantial connection to the City of Ripon, and with no felony convictions, outstanding warrants, or pending criminal cases.

Those selected can learn about local law enforcement through methods of instruction, including lectures, activities, discussions and scenario training.

In addition to learning about police operations and community service, they’ll have a chance to explore the possibility of career opportunities while developing relationships that could last well beyond the course.

Each student in the program will also have the option of doing one ride-along with a Ripon police officer or Community Service officer.

A graduation potluck will be held on Nov. 10 upon completion of the course.
