The position of Chief of Police could soon have the authority in Ripon in determining the installation of traffic control devices.

But it’ll take an amendment to the “Traffic Control Devices” ordinance to do so.

At Tuesday’s meeting, the Ripon City Council will consider doing just that during the 7 p.m. open session in the Council Chambers, 259 N. Wilma Ave. A public hearing on this first reading and introduction of the amendment is also scheduled during this time.

“Other cities provided the authority to either the Chief of Police or City Engineer,” said Chief Ed Ormonde in his report to elected leaders.

The purpose for the amendment would be to alleviate future confusion over authority while clearing guidance on requirements necessary in installing traffic control devices.

This matter recently came to the attention of staff during the process of determining the installation of stop signs in the hazardous intersection of West Milgeo Avenue and North Acacia Avenue just east of Highway 99.

According Ormonde, each request is first evaluated by staff – included are the positions of City of Engineer, Chief of Police and Public Works Director – with the engineers gathering traffic data and evaluating applicable state mandates to determine if the device is warranted.

If all checks out, the matter is sent before City Council for approval.

In other agenda items:

*Council members will discuss the San Joaquin One Voice Advocacy Trip 2019 to Washington, D.C., consisting once again of the Regional Project (Ripon Multi-Modal Station), Local Project (Ripon Surface Water Project) and Endorsement (Ripon Community Athletic Foundation stadium plans).

·* They’ll conduct a public hearing on “Dimension Regulations,” relating to regulations for accessory structures, patio covers and recreational vehicle covers.

*Elected leaders, in addition, will recognize January as National Anti-Slavery & Human Trafficking Prevention Month and Leslie Eastburg for his outstanding contribution to the community. Both will receive proclamations.
