The Ripon City Council will meet today to likely appoint the three qualified candidates in this year’s election to serve another four years.

The special session will take place at 4 p.m. in the Council Chambers, 259 N. Wilma Ave.

A resolution is on the agenda would cancel the General Municipal Election on Nov. 5 while appointing Mayor Leo Zuber, Vice Mayor Daniel de Graaf, and Gary Barton back to their posts.

All three opted for reelection and were unopposed.

If approved, the savings would be substantial to the City of Ripon.

The estimated costs to consolidate this election with that of San Joaquin County is between $40,000 and $46,000, according to the staff report by City Clerk & Finance Director Lisa Roos.

That’s No. 1 of the three options based on the section of the Election Code

“Option 2 does not apply because there were candidates nominated,” Roos said in her staff report.

Option 3, however, calls for the election to go on because only one person per office was nominated.

“In this case, the election would proceed as scheduled on Nov. 5, and there is the option that a write-in candidate could go through the process and be eligible to be election,” Roos added.
