Third-grade students from Ripon Christian Schools learned about the early days of Ripon during a recent visit to the Clarence Smit Museum.

Third-grade students from Ripon Christian Schools received an education on life during the early days.

They were all part of Tiana Houx’s and Sharon Postmus’ classes. The tour of Clarence Smit Museum to place last Wednesday (Nov. 15) and Thursday (Nov. 16).

According to the docents of the Ripon Historical Society – included were Kathy Ross, Loretta Hasley, Audrey Meyer, Margaret McCoy, and Nancy Vander Veen – the reason for the visit was for these third graders to learn about the differences between Ripon in the early days and modern times.

“They learned about the differences in music, tools, a doctor’s office and equipment, phones, cameras, sewing machines, barber shops, fishing equipment (spears, nets), kitchen appliances, washing machines, and lots more,” said Connie Jorgensen of the Ripon Historical Society.

All told, 69 students from RC Schools made the trip. The docents were also thrilled to share with them information of Ripon’s past.

The museum is named for City Administrator Clarence Smit, who was a charter member of the Ripon Historical Society. His efforts led to the construction of the first museum in town. Originally located at Stouffer Park, the local museum moved in 2011 to its current location at the old library building at 430 W. Main St.
