A pedestrian is in critical condition after being struck by a City of Manteca garbage truck early Monday morning on the 2100 block of W. Yosemite Ave.

According to the Manteca Police Department, the incident occurred at 4:51 a.m. near the intersection of Yosemite Avenue and Airport Way. When officers arrived, they began life-saving measures on the pedestrian, who was eventually transported to an area hospital for treatment.

As of press time the victim remains in an area hospital in critical condition.

The cause of the accident is currently being investigated by the Manteca Police Department’s Major Accident Investigation Team. The driver of the garbage truck, a City of Manteca employee, stayed on scene and has been cooperative with investigators looking to determine what happened.

It’s the second incident involving a City of Manteca refuse truck and a pedestrian in just over a year. Last March a pedestrian was killed when they were struck under the South Main Street overpass will walking across the westbound lanes of the Highway 120 Bypass.

In 2019, a man was arrested after he ran a red light and slammed into the side of a City of Manteca garbage truck near the intersection of South Main Street at Wetmore Avenue – sending the Chevrolet Impala he was driving up in flames and snarling traffic. The driver then fled the scene.
