No Manteca gas station has yet to install EV chargers
JUST OVER 10 YEARS TO GO

One of Manteca’s two Telsa supercharger stations that is located at Orchard Valley near Bass Pro Shops.

The ARCO gas station near Kaiser Hospital on Dale Road in North Modesto has something that fueling stations in Manteca don’t have — EV chargers.

The 2035 state mandate that all new vehicles sold in California must be zero emission is 10 years and a month away.

And as of Sept. 30, EVs account for 22 percent of all annual car sales in the Golden State.

But Manteca — with one new gas  station under construction — has no public EV chargers outside of the two Telsa supercharging stations and one at the Manteca Transit.

The Rotten Robbie’s being built at Wawona Street and Airport Way will not have EV chargers.

That said, an approved Circle K with a fueling station that is preparing to break ground along with Manteca’s second Auto Zone parts store on the southeast corner of Union Road and Lathrop Road will have six EV chargers.

There are other fueling stations the city has approved for construction including a 7-Eleven kitty corner from the Circle K, a Maverick gas station at Atherton Drive and Airport Way and two other gas stations on Airport Way at Daniels Street and at Lathrop Road.

None will have EV chargers.

There are also two other proposed fueling stations making their way through the city’s approval process. One is on the northeast corner of Airport and Atheron and the other is on the southeast corner of Louise Avenue and Airport Way.

It is not clear whether they will have EV stations.

The current City Council has declined to mandate EV chargers at fueling stations indicating that’s a market-driven decision the private sector should make.

The city does make sure that development meets state mandates that certain sized commercial endeavors as well as larger apartment complexes be at least pre-wired for EV chargers.

That said, a number of the apartment projects in the hopper do include having chargers at least at some of the parking stalls that will be wired to accommodate them.

Oil companies, such as Chevron that earlier this year opened a new gas station at Atherton and Union Road, as well as franchisees, may not see much of a market for EV chargers now or in the near future in Manteca.

Most people who own EVs charge them at home typically overnight.

And with two Telsa Supercharger stations — one  near Target on Spreckels Avenue and one near Bass Pro Shops at Orchard Valley — they may believe the competition is too tough currently.

That’s because the Tesla stations charge EVs much quicker than standard chargers such as the chargers at the ARCO station near the Modesto Kaiser.
