Mayor Singh makes case tonight for sales tax hike

Manteca Mayor Gary Singh is conducting a community outreach tonight.

It’s billed as “Meet the Mayor” with the aim of answering questions people have about the city and its services,

But if it is like his other 10 or so outreach events of the same name at neighborhood gatherings in the past several months, the No. 1 topic attendees will bring up will be Measure Q, the three-quarter cent sales tax for 20 years appearing on the Nov. 5 ballot.

Tonight’s event takes place at 6 p.m. at the VFW Veterans Center, 580 Moffat Blvd.

It is open to the public. Refreshments will be served.

Also on hand to answer questions will be City Manager Toni Lundgren, Police Chief Stephen Schluer, and Fire Chief Dave Marques.

The public can ask any questions they wish about the city, but in the past gatherings are any indication the topics — which all ultimately related to the sales tax hike proposal — will include:

*How come city streets aren’t in better shape and what road work is the city planning on doing?

*How is the city using existing taxes and why does Manteca need a tax hike?

*What are future plans for commercial and industrial development?

*Why aren’t the homes now being built paying more in fees?

*What is the city doing to improve public safety?

Singh is planning more “Meet the Mayor” gatherings including at Del Webb as well as Tom Moore Park in the heart of fast growing southwest Manteca.
