The Manteca Police Department has arrested one of the people they believe is responsible for the shooting death of a man in a neighborhood south of Woodward Park just before 1 p.m. on Monday.
Marquis L. Williams, 21, was spotted by Manteca Police officers several blocks away from the shooting on Mono Street by officers who had blanketed the area looking for subjects that were reportedly involved in the incident.
After questioning Williams, officers determined that he was directly involved in the incident that left one local man – whose name has not been released by authorities – dead and arrested him for murder.
Williams is currently being held without bail at the San Joaquin County Jail and is scheduled to appear in Department M1 of the Manteca branch to the San Joaquin County Superior Court today at 1:30 p.m. to answer to the charges.
While Williams is the first person to be taken into custody, he may not be the last according to the Manteca Police.
“While one arrest has been made, it is important to note that the investigation remains active and ongoing,” the agency wrote in a release announcing the arrest of Williams.
The official details as to what may have led to the altercation that resulted in a shooting have been sparse from authorities as they chase down leads and potential suspects, but officers that responded to the scene on Monday discovered the victim lying in the middle of the street and appearing to have been “struck by gunfire.”
Life-saving measures by both officers and EMS personnel who arrived to render aid were unsuccessful, and the victim was pronounced dead at the scene.
The murder was Manteca’s third of 2023 – following a shooting on Mono Way in February and an incident on Davis Street in April when a woman was found dead in her home that also contained her two young children. That woman’s husband was found later the same day in Merced County after having taken his own life in what officers described as a murder-suicide.
