The founder of a well-known Stockton nonprofit was arrested last week by the Manteca Police Department on charges that he sexually abused a child under the age of 10.

Samuel Nunez, 46, of Stockton, was arrested by Manteca Police Department detectives on a Ramey Warrant on Friday and charged with three felony sex crimes – continuous sexual abuse of a minor, sexual penetration with a foreign object when a victim is unable to give consent, and oral copulation with a victim under the age of 10.

Issued by a judge, a Ramey warrant allows officers to take somebody into custody before charges have officially been filed by the district attorney.

He is being held in the San Joaquin County Jail on $2 million bail and is scheduled to appear in San Joaquin County Superior Court today 1:30 p.m. to answer to the charges against him.

According to the Manteca Police Department, the abuse allegedly happened with a family member, and took place over an extended period of time with the same victim.

Nunez was the founder and onetime director of Fathers & Families of San Joaquin – a Stockton nonprofit that aims help those in need in in the wider San Joaquin County Area – and news of his arrest prompted the Stockton Unified School District to send letters to parents in both English and Spanish noting Nunez’ arrest.

The nonprofit that he operated until several months ago had a working relationship with Stockton Unified, serving students at a number of Stockton-based schools.

According to the Manteca Police Department, detectives are still investigating the possibility that there are more victims than the one that they are already aware of.
