The Manteca Police Department is taking strides toward improving public safety and fostering community engagement with the launch of its new Aware Response Program.

Designed to better assist individuals with special accommodations, disabilities, or unique needs during emergencies or interactions, the program encourages residents and frequent visitors to voluntarily share essential information with law enforcement to facilitate effective communication and ensure appropriate support.

Through the program, individuals can provide details that help officers address specific needs, such as hideaway keys for emergency responders, accommodations for elderly individuals who are hard of hearing or deaf, or considerations for visually impaired or blind residents. Other examples include information about individuals with autism or special needs, aggressive pets within registered residences, or managed vacation rentals like Airbnb properties. This information can also include emergency contact details for added support.

“We’re especially proud to introduce this program during Autism Acceptance Month as part of our ongoing commitment to inclusion, compassion, and community-focused service,” the department shared on its Facebook page. Highlighting the importance of this initiative, Manteca Police Chief Stephen Schluer emphasized its benefits for both law enforcement and the community. “Having this information ahead of time helps our officers respond with greater awareness and understanding, improving safety and communication in critical situations,” Schluer said. He also urged residents to take advantage of the program, adding, “This is the next step in our commitment to improving public safety and community involvement.”

Those interested in enrolling a loved one or registering their residence can do so through the program’s dedicated webpage, which is accessible via the City of Manteca website.

The Aware Response Program marks a thoughtful and proactive approach to fostering trust and improving outcomes in emergency situations. It underscores the department’s commitment to ensuring that all members of the Manteca community feel supported, safe, and included. Residents are encouraged to participate and help make this new initiative a success.
