Manteca High has earned recognition as a 2024 California Distinguished School.
The honor means Manteca High — based on criteria set by the State Board of Education — is considered to be among the top 5 to 10 percent high schools in California.
It is also the first time since its inception in 1985 that a Manteca Unified School District high school has earned what is considered a prestigious award for California public schools.
District elementary schools have been named California Distinguished Schools six times.
They were Nile Garden and McParland in 2020; Brock Elliott, McParland, and Stella Brockman in 2010; and Brock Elliott in 2006.
“Our school places a high focus on academics,” noted Manteca High Principal Megan Peterson.
“With the help and support of our teachers, our administrative team met with every 11th-grade student this year to discuss their individual growth goals. Our educators have done an incredible job evolving their teaching practices to better meet the needs of today’s students.”
Manteca High stood out by demonstrating an outstanding performance in English Language Arts (ELA) and math and reducing suspensions.
The school was 54.7 points below the state standard in ELA in 2022.
In 2023, Manteca High was 7.1 points above the standard for an increase of 61.8 points in a single year.
Manteca High not only excelled in overall performance but has also demonstrated accelerated academic growth for historically underserved student groups, including English language learners, students with disabilities, socioeconomically disadvantaged students, and African American students.
“I am so proud of our students and exceptional teaching staff for the work that they’ve done to receive this much-deserved recognition,” Peterson added. “For a school that is well-known for its athletic programs, I am thrilled to showcase our outstanding academic performance.”
Manteca High School’s inclusion in the Distinguished Schools program highlights its commitment to innovation, talent, and success in supporting students’ growth and achievements.
To identify outstanding schools, the California Department of Education (CDE) uses a rigorous selection process, focusing on various measures reported through the 2023 California School Dashboard.
The comprehensive evaluation considers academic achievement, positive school climate, and growth in student performance.
The California Distinguished Schools Award alternates each year between elementary (even years) and secondary (odd years) schools.
In the past, schools that were recognized as distinguished held the title for four years Currently, schools that are recognized as distinguished hold the title for two years.
