A man living in a shed-style structure attached to a home died in a fire Monday night.

The street side of a home on the alley at 623½ Virginia Street as well a large tree were fully engulfed when the first Manteca Fire Department unit arrived after a call was made at 6:42 p.m.

Four engine companies — including one from Lathrop Manteca Fire — took 40 minutes to bring the fire under control. Salvage and overhaul efforts continued for three more hours.

Firefighters efforts kept damage contained to the home where the blaze started and had several attached shed-style structures.

The man that died was found in an adjoining shed structure. The shed and surrounding fence was completely destroyed while the home sustained major damage.

The cause of the fire is under investigation by the fire department while Manteca police and the county medical examiner are handing the fatality.

A Manteca building inspector declared the home inhabitable.  The tree is being removed by the city parks department.

Damage to the home valued at $375,000 was estimated to be about $80,000 with an additional $3,000 in contents lost.

The fire displaced the home’s resident.

The home is in an older central Manteca neighborhood where almost all of the housing predates 1940.

The neighborhood is south of West Yosemite Avenue between Veach and Sequoia avenues southwesterly of downtown.
