MANTECA ACCIDENTS UP 19% IN PAST YEAR

The streets of Manteca are getting more perilous when it comes to the frequency of accidents.

There were 535 accidents in the first six months of this year. That’s up 19.69 percent from the same January to June period for 2020.

At the current pace accidents in Manteca will eclipse the record of 1,065 set in 2019. There were 958 overall accidents in 2020.

On the positive side, there were no traffic fatalities through June 30 of this year. The first six months of last year saw three deaths on the streets of Manteca.

Injury accidents were also down 10.1 percent going from 99 to 89 based on data provided by the Manteca Police Department.

Hit and runs were up 15.56 percent as they went from 45 to 52. The number of accidents involving a motorist driving under the influence was up 34.62 percent jumping from 26 to 35.

The number of citations for moving violations — driving issues that contribute to accidents such as distracted driving, speeding, and failing to stop at a stop sign or red light — were up 5.42 percent in the first six months of this year. Manteca Police issued 1,166 such tickets through June 30 compared to 1,106 in 2020

Police issued 371 non-moving violations such as for illegal truck parking, down 41.76 percent from the 637 issued in the first six months of 2020

They also made 38 DUI arrests, up 153.33 percent from 15 in the first six months of 2020.

If Manteca goes without a traffic fatality for the rest of the year it would be the first time since 2014 someone hasn’t died due to a traffic mishap on the streets of Manteca since 2014.

Last year six people ended up dying in traffic accidents. That tied the record set in 2019.
