Lemonade stand helps Logan in 5-year-old’s battle with leukemia
Logan
Logan Barrera, 5, of Manteca

You can make Logan Barreras’ day this Saturday.

And you can help his family at the same time.

Logan is a transitional kindergarten student at Stella Brockman School.

He loves motorcycles, Halloween, plus Disney’s Woody and Coco.

Logan is also battling B-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia.

Dining for Hope is conducting a Lemonade Stand fundraiser on Saturday, March 23, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the family’s driveway.

Their home is at 700 Garnet Place in the Manteca neighborhood northeast of Union Road and Alameda Street.

The fundraiser includes lemonade and #TeamLogan brackets with respective suggested donations of $1 and $5 respectively.

“Just showing support can help,” said Diane Giles, who is spearheading efforts along with other volunteers to stage the Lemonade Stand fundraiser.

It will be the 35th such fundraiser Dining for Hope out of Ripon has done for families with children stricken by cancer.

Giles was moved to start the low-key effort after a teammate on her son Kyle’s baseball team was diagnosed with cancer.

She noted most people aren’t aware of what a family faces when a child is stricken with a disease like cancer.

One parent often has to quit their job to provide full-time care of their child.

There are endless co-payments to make.

“Insurance doesn’t cover everything,” Giles said.

Then there are other unexpected expenses associated with treatment.

It includes gas bills that skyrocket because more often than not the specialized physicians and other medical care their child needs is in the Bay Area.

To help such families, Giles and others organize fundraisers like the low-key lemonade stand and other events such as bunco and bingo.

Giles noted it helps families “knowing they have the support of the community.”
