A few parking changes are coming to the City of Lathrop.
A public hearing was held at the March 10 Lathrop City Council meeting to introduce the ordinance amending Title 10 (chapter & section on designated no parking areas) of the Municipal Code.
Most of the areas that would be affected by the changes are in the industrial areas and new development, specifically, in the River Island community.
City Engineer Brad Taylor noted that California Vehicle Code (Section 22507) requires cities to establish no parking zones within city limits by ordinance.
“The reason for the update is that we have to accommodate for the installation of bike lanes and to help local businesses, and update for new development,” he said.
The proposed changes include installing timed parking on D’Arcy Parkway to support local businesses – 30 minutes to allow for truck drivers to conduct their business – and to separate for Class II bike lanes.
The proposal also calls for prohibiting truck and overnight parking on Tesla Drive, which would be similar to that along Murphy Parkway.
Instead, Tesla Drive would be limited to 12-hour parking and no commercial vehicles weighing over 5 tons.
“Tesla employees would have to rotate (parking their cars) every 12 hours,” Taylor said.
Parking, in addition would be prohibited along McKinley Avenue, in particular, on the northern section between Lathrop and Louise avenues.
The other prohibited parking roads involve River Island – namely, Briarstone Lane, Callerton Avenue, Haverhill Lane, Riptide Way, Roll Tide Way, and Winton Avenue.
The latter three (Riptide, Roll Tide, and Winton) roads, Taylor noted, surround River Island High School.
No one from the public stepped up at the public hearing.
Elected leaders supported the introduction and first reading of the ordinance amendments.
