The stolen Pokeman cards

One of the latest shoplifting trends is that of Pokémon cards.

The Lathrop Police Department reported an incident that occurred Sunday evening about 9 o’clock.

Officers responded to the report of a theft in process involving one person inside the local Target store, gathering Pokémon cards while the other suspect awaited in a getaway car.

“The suspect inside the store passed all registers without paying, stealing over $600 worth of Pokémon cards, and they fled on foot as officers approached,” police said via social media.

Officers gave chase on foot, catching the suspect. The driver in the getaway car was also apprehended, and was taken into custody.

In addition to popular trading cards from the Lathrop Target, police noted that the suspects had over $1,000 worth of stolen merchandise that was later determined to have been stolen from the Manteca Target store.

Officers, in addition, came across several hundred dollars-worth of stolen merchandise from the Game Stop in Manteca.

Lathrop police noted that the two suspects are from the Bay Area and were arrested on various charges and booked into jail. Their vehicle was towed away.

Earlier this year, thieves broke into a San Jose business, making off with “more than 35,000 Pokémon cards,” The Guardian reported in February.

On Sept. 9, two robbers in Osaka, Japan reportedly walked out with over $70,000 worth of Pokémon cards, threatening store employees who were closing up for the night.

Lathrop police, meanwhile, continue to take a zero-tolerance approach to theft and “will enforce the law to the fullest extent” in an effort to ensure safety to the community.
