Lathrop police arrested a Stockton man on several felonies Sunday including possession of an illegal assault rifle, a fully automatic illegal handgun, and several hundred rounds of ammunition.

The Lathrop Police Department arrested a 21-year-old Stockton man late Sunday evening on several felony charges.

Included was an illegal assault rifle, which was “in plain sight” in his vehicle, said police via social media, along with a fully automatic illegal handgun and several hundred rounds of ammunition.

According to police, Officer Elliott was patrolling near Mossdale Landing Community Park when he observed a suspicious vehicle.

He noticed people exiting the vehicle while leaving their music playing, raising his suspicion.

Elliott approached the vehicle, observing what was determined to be an illegal assault rifle in plain sight.

He investigated further coming across the ammo and illegal handgun.

The suspect (his name was withheld by police) was the registered owner of the vehicle. He was contacted and detained without incident.

The Stockton resident was arrested and booked into jail for several felonies.

Lathrop police continue their efforts of locating and getting illegal firearms off the streets.
