Lathrop Police shot 40-year-old Manteca resident Juan Valdez — who was fleeing from an attempt to arrest him for domestic violence — after he reportedly tried to carjack a vehicle on southbound Interstate 5 early Saturday afternoon.

The shooting closed all southbound lanes of Interstate 5 for six hours, backing up traffic for more than six miles.

The incident started at 12:35 p.m.

Officers were pursuing a man driving a Nissan sedan, who was a suspect in a domestic violence incident.

The suspect drove south on I-5 from Roth Road until his vehicle became disabled on the right shoulder of the interstate, south of Lathrop Road.

At that point, the suspect attempted to carjack a vehicle on southbound I-5.

That was when an officer shot Valdez.

Valdez was still in the hospital on Monday. He is expected to survive.

A press release did not indicate whether Valdez was armed.

Lathrop police are investigating the domestic violence call as well as if officer was justified in shooting Valdez,

The California Highway Patrol is also investigating the police shooting and attempted carjacking

It was Lathrop Police Department's first case of an officer shooting a suspect.
