An interim solution to the worst major roadway in Manteca — Airport Way — may cost upwards of $4 million to address.
Despite the city’s budget woes, there appears to be adequate restricted funds to do the work along with the long delayed street work in the Mayors Park and Springtime Estates neighborhoods as well as widen Main Street through downtown to four lanes.
The Manteca City Council was told Tuesday the Airport Way interim project could either get started this year as part of the current budget or programmed as part of the budget for the fiscal year starting July 1, 2021.
The city’s engineering department has looked at Airport Way from Woodward Avenue to Roth Road to scope out needed work. Some of it will involve digging up short segments that have to be replaced and other work may include simply repaving segments.
Widening Airport Way, which could cost in excess of $20 million for segments north of Wawona Street, would take place in future years. Segments of the work would be done by developers as growth occurs. But segments such as between Wawona Street and Yosemite Avenue that have numerous landowners and no large scale development plans would likely be on the city’s dime.
