HOPE’S CLOSET OPENS
Non-profit thrift opens next to Hafer’s
hope chest
Hope’s Closet in Manteca offers quality wear amid a whimsical atmosphere.

MiKaila Johnson took to social media to introduce the recent opening of Hope’s Closet.

That’s newest endeavor of the local non-profit Ray of Hope, which just opened to the public next door to Hafers Home Furnishing, 1030 W. Yosemite Ave.

Johnson, who is an intern from Manteca Unified’s BE.Tech Academies, is gaining valuable and practical work experience with Ray of Hope.

“We’re looking for anyone who might be interested in being a teen volunteer – they’ll gain (retail) experience and a sense of giving back,” said Ray of Hope Executive Director Laura Vieira-Saunders, who put forth the effort to brighten up Hope’s Closet in both quality goods and ambience.

Her hope was to make the interior a cross between the Pottery Barn and The Disney Store. “We wanted to make this place a fun and special (shopping) experience,” Vieira-Saunders said.

She received a boost from volunteers such as Minerva Ruiz of Keller Williams Realtors and Naomi Clark of the former Simply Irresistible Children’s Boutique.

The latter donated the giant-sized bean stalk with the flat screen television to keep younger children occupied while a parent spends time shopping around.

Ruiz helped out with the decorative signage.

Ray of Hope’s John Saunders designed the jungle tree with vines in the middle of the thrift store to match the bean stalk.

Open from Tuesdays to Fridays, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Hope’s Chest offers a variety of clothes, shoes, and apparel for people and children of all ages.

“We have a corner (of clothes and apparel) for all the little girls who are special princesses,” said Johnson.

Donations can be dropped off at the rear of the store during business days from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Hope’s Closet will allow children who are referred to Ray of Hope from the various agencies to shop in comfortable environment.

Proceeds from the store will help fund the Ray of Hope programs.
