Better World Rescue — a Tracy-based non-profit that spent $29,000 on efforts to help place Manteca Animal Shelter dogs last year — is conducting a Wine & Whiskers fundraiser in Saturday, June 10, from noon to 6 p.m.

It takes place at SK Hira Vineyards, 8458 West Linne Road, Tracy.

It will feature a live auction, live music, bake sale, photo booth, raffle baskets, food, and more.

Proceeds will benefit shelter animals as well as assist low-income pet owners.

Better World Rescue is focused “on keeping animals in their loving homes and out of shelters through spay/neuter assistance, behavioral training resources, and medical bill assistance.”

Volunteers with the group — including many that reside in Manteca — were part of the community-based effort that was successful in getting city leaders to step up municipal efforts involving the operation of the Manteca Animal Shelter on Wetmore Street and South Main Street.

As a result, the city shelter attained “no-kill” status for the first three months of 2022

That means at least 90 percent of the dogs turned in — or picked up and not claimed — were placed in forever homes or with rescue groups.

It is a major turnround from previous years when the city was only able to save 66 percent of the animals it handled.

Manteca Interim Police Chief Steve Schluer has credited the turnaround to the volunteers, the public participating in doggy days out, and staff.
The Manteca Animal Shelter earlier this year launched Dogs Day Out during business hours, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday.

Dogs Day Out helps reduce kennel stress, enhances and sharpens a dog’s social skills by socializing with people which helps led to successful.

Schluer hopes to be able to secure an additional animal services officer position in the upcoming city budget to allow fulltime coordination with rescue groups and such to help make sure the city can continue its “no-kill” status.
