After only five years on the Manteca Unified School Board of Education, Area 3 Trustee Melanie Greene has given her resignation. Greene isn’t abandoning the district, but rather seeking to serve Manteca students and families as an Assistant Superintendent.

The Manteca Unified School District is accepting applications for those seeking to represent families in the district’s Area 3.
The MUSD Board of Education reviewed Greene’s resignation on Wednesday and discussed the best way to fill her seat. Calling for applicants interested in filling the seat is the easiest route the board can take.

“We can also consider going to a special election, but that will cost us a pretty penny,” said Board president Stephen Schluer.

The board decided to move forward with the applicant process instead of holding a special election.

The board will decide at their next meeting if they will interview applicants or move straight to appointment, with a final decision being made by June.

MUSD Board of Education Trustee Area 3 is mainly the east side of town and includes the areas around Calla Alternative High School, and Woodward, Cowell and New Haven elementary schools. Manteca Unified School District is governed by a seven-member board elected by area, which includes the cities of Manteca, Lathrop, Stockton and French Camp. The elected member serves a four-year term. The governing board meets once a month with open session beginning at 6 p.m.

The role of the MUSD Board of Education is to set the direction for the district by focusing on student learning and achievement through a process that involves the community, parents/guardians, students, and staff. The MUSD Board is in charge of a $460 million budget for 30 school sites that serve over 25,000 students.

Greene was initially elected to the MUSB in 2020 and was reelected to the office in 2024 when she ran unopposed. Her term was set to end in December 2028.
