Lloyd Wofford was the first-ever principal at Golden West Elementary School.
He was nearing his 100th birthday back in August when it was announced that the school’s multi-purpose room will be named in his honor.
On Friday, Nov. 29, a dedication ceremony is scheduled for that day at the Manteca Unified campus at 1031 N. Main St., beginning at 5 p.m.
The Golden West facility will officially take on the name of Lloyd W. Wofford at the that time.
Wofford and Greg Leland, who will have the large gym named in his honor at Lathrop High, were suggested by members of the community during the summer.
Wofford, who opened the school in the early 1960s, was in attendance at the MUSD meeting held several months ago, and was joined by family, friends, and his former secretary at Golden West, Ann Owen, who served as his right-hand person.
“(He) shared some words about how much MUSD means to him – his heartfelt speech highlighted the profound significance of education and the pivotal role every staff member plays in shaping success,” said the district’s social media site proudtobemusd.
A committee was tasked with the naming of the school facilities, with Wofford and Leland – he recently retired as principal at Lathrop High after a 39-year careers with the school district – being selected for their “incredible impact on our school communities.”
