Girl, 13, arrested after threatening Sequoia School & MHS shootings

A 13 year-old girl has been arrested by Manteca Police for making online threats of a shooting at Sequoia School that targeted specific students.

The girl, who was booked into juvenile hall for crime threats as well as threatening a public officer, used Instagram to also threaten a shooting at Manteca High.

Detectives are sure they have the suspect who made the specific threats but believe she did not have the actual means of carrying them out.

Her threats were separate from the school shooting threats and rumors circulating on social media that are being investigated across the country.

While working with the FBI to investigate the online threats of school shootings in the area, Manteca Detectives took the lead of a separate and targeted threat to shoot students and faculty at Sequioa Elementary School and a less specific school shooting at Manteca High School.

The suspect sent the threats out on Instagram that listed specific students from Sequioa Elementary School. She intended to instill fear in the listed students.

The suspect did not attend school today.

Her parents were contacted and cooperative with the investigation. Manteca Detectives and School Resource Officers were not able to contact all the named victims Monday. But they will continue to interview them as they are located.

A Manteca Polices spokesperson said it was important for parents to speak to their children regarding the real consequences of making threats in person or online.

Such threats will be investigated and result in consequences to the threat maker.

Manteca Detectives continue to investigate this case and the separate rumors of school shootings made on line this weekend. Anyone with information or leads can call the Manteca Police Department at 209.456.8101.

Police earlier on Monday issued a safety advisory on rumors circulating about a potential school shooting.

Police in both Manteca and Lathrop were aware of these recent social media posts and text messages that were being shared by students regarding this matter.

“Last evening, we began investigating multiple reports of these posts. Detectives were immediately called and have been working diligently to assess the situation,” Lathrop police said on Monday.

Those same posts and texts were also being circulated in neighboring communities and jurisdictions, with Manteca police adding: “At this time, there is no evidence suggesting that these threats are legitimate – however, we take all threats of violence seriously and will continue to maintain a strong presence on all school campuses to ensure the safety of our students and staff.”

The Lathrop Police Department, aware of the recent social postings, responded, saying: “We are actively investigating the reports and collaborating with our neighboring police agencies and school district personnel.”

Lathrop police has also increased law enforcement presence at the schools, providing additional security for students, staff, and the community.

According to the Stockton Police Department, the surge in these school threats continue to mirror a nationwide threat.

Officers there apprehended a 16-year-old student from Lincoln Unified for making threatening posts on social media.

“However, upon investigation, the threats were found to be unsubstantiated,” Stockton police said, adding that it’s crucial for parents and students to realize that making such threats can lead to disciplinary action at their school coupled with potential legal consequences.
