Gas leak on River Islands by school forces residents to shelter in place

A number of River Islands residents were forced to shelter in place on Friday after construction crews struck a 4-inch gas line that ruptured.

And it happened right next to a school.

Shortly after noon on Friday the Lathrop Manteca Fire District was dispatched to the empty lot across from Havasu Lane and adjacent to the River Islands Technology Academy – sending Engine 35 and Battalion 30 to the scene – and were notified that the offending gas line was blowing a substantial

Both the Lathrop Police Department and Lathrop Public Works Department also responded and assisted with closing off streets to the area while firefighters worked to create a perimeter and prepare to respond if the ruptured gas line were to ignite.

Students at the River Island Technology Academy were not on site on Friday therefore school operations were not impacted by the incident.

Crews from the Lathrop Manteca Fire District remained on scene for several hours, and 10 homeowners were notified of the incident and told to stay indoors at their home until they were notified by first responders that it was safe to leave.

No injuries were reported as a result of the leak.
