A Manteca driver is going to be without their car for at least 30 days – costing them thousands of dollars in impound fees.
The crime? Fleeing Lathrop Police officers at speeds in excess of 100 miles per hour.
According to Lathrop Police, the incident occurred on Jan. 7 when officers attempted to stop the vehicle for numerous vehicle code violations. Rather than yielding to officers the unidentified driver fled at a rate of speed that prompted officers to call off the search in the name of public safety.
With the license plate information officers were able to investigate who owned the vehicle, and subsequently sought and received a seizure warrant that allowed them to take the vehicle into their custody.
When officers discovered that the vehicle was registered to an address in Manteca, Lathrop Police teamed up with the Manteca Police to serve the warrant on Monday.
“The vehicle was towed and impounded on a 30 day hold, which, if the owner wants it back, will cost a couple thousand dollars in fees,” Lathrop Police said in a statement about the incident. “When people jeopardize the safety of the public, we will work tirelessly to enforce the law to the fullest extent.”
The seizure is the second in a number of weeks for the agency that has taken a zero-tolerance approach to unsafe driving in the community – targeting known locations where sideshow activities and illegal street races occur as a way to deter the behavior within Lathrop’s city limits.
Over the weekend a driver was arrested, and their vehicle was towed after officers found the vehicle spinning donuts in the area of D’Arcy Parkway and Christopher Way.
