Spinning donuts in your car with your mother inside is one thing.

Getting your car impounded because you’re spinning donuts in front of a Lathrop Police Officer – prompting your mother to find a new way home – is another thing entirely.

A 22-year-old man from Alameda found this out the hard way earlier this week when an officer observed a grey Dodge Charger spinning its tires and driving in a reckless manner.

According to the agency, the incident occurred on Friday just before 6 p.m. – during heavy commute hours. Officers observed the vehicle driving recklessly and stopped the vehicle which was ultimately impounded for 30 days while the driver was issued a misdemeanor citation.

“The Lathrop Police Department works hard to keep our streets safe for the motoring public and community as a whole,” the agency wrote in the statement announcing the arrest. “We have a zero-tolerance approach to exhibition of speed, reckless driving, and side show activity, and will enforce the law to the fullest extent.”

Agencies throughout San Joaquin County have taken a hardline stance against sideshows – illegal car shows where vehicles often spin donuts and break traction – and related activity by coming down hard on those that break that law. A countywide task force has racked up violators resulting in arrests, impounded vehicles, and even the recovery of stolen firearms that were present at larger events.
