Dhaliwal selects former opponent to fill chief of staff post for District 3

Angel Sepulveda came in third in the March primary for the District 3 seat on the San Joaquin County Board of Supervisors.

Sonny Dhaliwal — who along with former Manteca Mayor Steve DeBrum advanced to the Nov. 5 run-off — ended up being elected to represent Manteca, Lathrop, the Delta area, and a portion of northwest Stockton.

On Tuesday, the board is expected to appoint Dhaliwal’s choice of Sepulveda to serve as his chief of staff when they meet at 9 a.m. in downtown Stockton.

The position — formally known as a legislative assistant — has an annual salary of $107,726 plus benefits.

Sepulveda opened her own State Farm Insurance Agency in 2014.

She has given her time and effort to various organizations throughout the county such as San Joaquin County Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, Rotary Club of Stockton, the Boys and Girls Club of Stockton, and the Child Abuse Prevention Council of San Joaquin.

Dhaliwal has strong ties to the non-Stockton portion of his district.

Besides being a Lathrop resident and having just completed 12 years serving as the city’s mayor, Dhaliwal has an established working relation with City of Manteca elected officials as well as members within both communities.

Sepulveda’s hiring gives Dhaliwal an effective way of working with the Stockton portion of his district through an established community leader.

Each supervisor appoints their own chief of staff subject to the board’s concurrence. It is the supervisors’ only paid staff.

Dhaliwal took the oath of office on Monday.

He is the first supervisor in nearly 30 years who will represent all of the City of Manteca instead of a half of it.

Prior to the restricting of the board seats — and effort DeBrum chaired — Manteca was split between two districts.
