Deadline for Lathrop City Council applications Jan. 2

Applications are due Thursday, Jan. 2, for those interested in filling the Lathrop City Council vacancy.

It’s a two-year provisional post that runs through December 2026.

The seat became available following the recent election. 

Councilman Paul Akinjo was voted in as mayor during the November election, with Sonny Dhaliwal – he served six consecutive terms as mayor of Lathrop – leaving as he was elected to the San Joaquin County Board of Supervisors.

Applications (available on the City of Lathrop website under announcements: www.ci.lathrop.ca.us) can be turned in via email or in person at Lathrop City Hall, attention City Clerk, 390 Towne Centre Drive, by 4 p.m. on the Jan. 2 deadline.

 A special Lathrop City Council meeting is scheduled at 5 p.m., Monday, Jan. 6, in the Council Chamber to consider the applications and appointment.

According to Government Code, if council fills the vacancy by appointment, the person appointed will hold office until the next general election – in this case, Nov. 3, 2026.
