Car slams into pole, cuts power to 4,600 homes
car hits pole
The City of Lathrop Police Department responded to an incident Friday in which a vehicle struck a power pole, causing power outages that left about 4,600 addresses in Lathrop and Manteca in the dark.

Areas of Manteca and Lathrop experienced power outages Friday due to a vehicle colliding into a PG&E power pole.

The City of Lathrop Police Department posted via social media that officers responded to multiple calls regarding a vehicle that struck the high-voltage pole that evening.

“Additionally, 911 callers reported that a fast-moving vegetation fire had started as a result of the collision,” Lathrop police said.

Officers, responding to the call, quickly reached the area and located the driver, who was uninjured – they determined that intoxication was not a factor in the crash.

The Manteca Fire Department also responded, and was able to contain the fire before it spread and caused further damage.

According to police, the collision resulted in about 4,600 addresses in both Lathrop and Manteca experiencing widespread power outages.

The power outage also impacted Lathrop’s traffic signals and street lights.

Once the scene was cleared, officers then had to address unsafe driving behaviors at intersections affected by the traffic signal outages.

“During this time, one of the drivers who was stopped was found to be under the influence of alcohol,” said Lathrop police, who added the driver was arrested and later booked into San Joaquin County Jail.

They held a planned power outage in town over the weekend, providing this reminder: if a traffic signal is dark or flashing red, drivers should always come to complete stop and proceed into the intersection the intersection only when it’s safe to do so.
