They meet a few times each year.

The Manteca Union High School Classmates Reunion was held Wednesday at Chez Shari on the grounds of the Manteca Park Golf Course.

This thrice yearly luncheon gathering included nearly 100 who were – and still are – proud Buffaloes, from 1957 to 1969.

“We also welcome those who attended (MHS) close to those years as well,” said organizer Sally Mendes.

This is the same event founded in 2009 by the late Mary May from the Class of 1962 along with six of her classmates.

They met at the old Perko’s Restaurant at the beginning and watched it grow from there.

The MUHS Classmates Reunion group was back, socializing and enjoying being in the company of old familiar faces.

Bev Sommerfeld from the Class of 1962 remembered those good old days.

“It was a different time back then,” she said.

Sommerfeld along with Pam Rocha from the Class of 1964 worked the door at the luncheon, welcoming those in attendance while checking them in.

Of course, many who attended school during those days were familiar with one another.

“We were fortunate that we had just one high school (in Manteca),” said Rocha, who knew of Sommerfeld back then.

The Class of 1966 had the most in attendance, Mendes announced.

Included was Beverly Silveria Fletcher, who referred to herself as a “cow girl.”

She raised sheep and once had a lamb who, much to her surprise, became a Reserve Champion at a farm event held at the San Francisco Cow Palace.

That was one of her fondest moments during her days at MHS.

The luncheon also consisted of various memorabilia from the past including a Buffaloes football program from the 1962 game against Berkeley High.

The next meet up is planned for four months from now.

MHS is gearing up for its all-classes reunion – held every two years – hosted by the alumni group.

This event scheduled for Saturday, April 26, at the Manteca Senior Center, 259 Cherry Ln, will kickoff with a luncheon while covering the history of the school coupled with a tour of the Manteca Historical Museum.
