Members of the Manteca Garden Club – included are Barbara Stoner, Pam Dias, Tom Powell, Ellen Paradiso, Alene Griffin, and Paula Elias – along with City of Manteca’s Scott Heaton, Cody Ross and crew celebrated Arbor Day on Thursday by planting dwarf bottlebrush and society garlic at Manteca Fire Station 243 and the Tidewater Bikeway.

For the past 32 years, the city of Manteca has been designated a Tree City USA.

This Arbor Day Foundation Program recognizes green communities across America since 1976.

Spearheading the efforts locally is the Manteca Garden Club.

“One of our objectives since the club was founded in 1954 is city beautification,” said President Paula Elias.

In celebration of Arbor Day, the Manteca Garden Club and the Manteca Parks Department worked together Thursday to place  donated plants at Manteca Fire Department 243 as well as 20 trees the Tidewater Bikeway.

Club member Tom Powell not only coordinated the efforts with the city but also helped out with the panting of varieties such as dwarf bottlebrush and society garlic.

The Manteca Garden Club has been longtime participant in sprucing up the city as part of the Arbor Day celebration, usually by planting trees and plants in the local parks.

The local nonprofit will be conducting its annual Garden Tour on Saturday, May 13, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tickets are $20.

According to Elias, this is Manteca Garden Club’s biggest fundraiser, with proceeds contributing in scholarships to local high school students, school gardens, and city beautification, to name a few.
